PADDLE ANTENNAS SHOULD BE NO CLOSER THEN 30 FEET FROM THE NEAREST TRANSMITTER (SHURE ACTUALLY RECOMMENDS 50 FT).  They are generally good in most circumstances up to 250-300ft with clear line of sight to the performers.

  • Paddles are directional and need to be pointed towards the performance area - they are shaped like an arrow to make orienting them easier.
  • Paddles have a cardioid pattern pick up so anything that is outside the 100-120 degree cone (50-60 on each side of the nose) is severely attenuated.
  • We use 2 antennas because all our systems use true diversity receivers, and two antennas provides 2 distinct signal paths increasing the chances that a strong signal will always be presented to the receiver thus reducing the incidence of drop out.  The receivers automatrcally select the strongest of the two signals and quickly swap if the other becomes significantly stronger.  For the most part - 99.999% - it is impossible to detect this switch-over unless you notice a change to the display on some models.


  • With good line of sight, distances up to 75ft are good except in very bad RF environments
  • a transmitter should NEVER BE CLOSER THAN 6-10 FEET to the whip antennas - you risk causing interference and drop outs to transmitters further away, and the  signal may be distorted.  So if you must put the rack in the wings and can't get the actors to be more than 10feet away, consider putting the rack up on top of a cupboard or in the fly-tower/ electric battens above stage

There are 2 reasons to use directional antennas:

  • if you are more than 60-70ft from the microphone transmitters - the gain of these paddles captures more signal producing fewer dropouts
  • when there are lots of competing RF signals - the paddles reject RF signals that are not in the direction  the antennas point.
